Best cheap horror games for Halloween 2026 (and when to actually buy them)
Horror is the one genre with a fixed annual discount season, and it is the easiest genre to overpay in — because everyone shops for it in the same two weeks, when demand is highest. Here is how to plan it properly.
The timing, which is the whole game
Steam runs its Halloween event at the very end of October, typically in the last few days of the month. That is when the storefront gets loud about horror.
The mistake is treating that as the buying window. Two things are true every year:
- Key stores discount earlier. Third-party retailers start their spooky-season promotions in the first half of October, ahead of Steam, because that is their only chance to sell before Steam’s own sale takes all the attention.
- The deepest cut is often not in October at all. For older horror titles, the all-time low frequently dates from a previous summer or autumn sale, not from a Halloween one.
So the rule is: check the price history before you buy anything in October. Our guide on how to check a game’s price history takes about thirty seconds to apply, and the sale calendar tells you what is coming after Halloween if the discount is not good enough yet.
To be scared on your own
The single-player canon, all of it old enough to be genuinely cheap:
- Alien: Isolation — still the best stealth-horror game ever made, and one of the most reliably discounted. If you buy only one thing from this list, buy this.
- SOMA — less jump scare, more existential dread. The horror stays with you for days afterwards.
- Amnesia: The Bunker — the series reinvented as a systemic sandbox. Much better than its reputation suggests.
- Outlast — pure, unsubtle, effective. Short enough to finish in an evening, which is exactly the point on Halloween.
- Signalis — a modern take on the fixed-camera survival horror of the nineties. Small, dense, unforgettable.
- Darkwood — top-down, no cheap scares, and more frightening than almost anything else here. Wildly underrated.
To be scared with other people
Co-op horror has taken over the genre, and it is where the cheap chaos lives:
- Phasmophobia — the one that started the wave. Rarely discounted deeply because it has never stopped selling.
- Lethal Company — comedy and terror in the same breath. Cheap even at full price.
- Dead by Daylight — free to try often enough that you should never pay full price for the base game.
- Sons of the Forest — survival horror with friends. The fear fades as you get competent, which is its own kind of arc.

The key-store angle, and the one caution
Horror has an unusually old catalogue — most of the essentials are five to fifteen years old. Old catalogue means cheap keys, which is why horror is one of the genres where third-party stores routinely beat Steam by a wide margin. If you are building a Halloween backlog, this is the genre where it pays off most.
The caution is the usual one: check the region before you pay. A three-euro key that will not activate on your account is not a bargain, and horror titles from smaller publishers are region-locked more often than average. Our guide to regional keys explains what each label means, and our browser extension flags offers that will not work in your country while you browse.
If you are new to buying outside Steam, read the seven rules first. They take five minutes and they prevent essentially every way this goes wrong.
What not to buy in October
Two categories, both predictable.
This year’s horror release. New horror sells hardest in October, which is exactly why it is not discounted in October. Wishlist it and buy it in the winter sale.
Anything you are buying because the storefront put it in front of you. Steam’s Halloween page is a merchandising surface, not a recommendation engine. The cheap gems on this list will not be on the front page; you have to go looking for them.
The short version
Buy the old classics from a key store in early October, before Steam’s event pulls attention and prices firm up. Buy this year’s new horror in December. And check the price history on anything before you pay — on a fifteen-year-old horror game, today’s “discount” is often well above what it hit last summer.
