Steam regional keys: what they are and how to avoid problems

If you buy Steam keys from stores like Eneba, Kinguin, or Instant Gaming, you’ve probably seen labels like “EUROPE”, “GLOBAL” or “RU VPN”. What do they mean and which one should you buy?

What is a regional key?

Steam lets publishers restrict which countries a key can be activated in. This is done because of price differences between regions — a game might cost $60 in the US but $20 in Russia or Argentina.

Regional keys are cheaper but only work in certain countries.

Region types

Global / Worldwide

Works in any country. The safest option. If in doubt, always buy Global.

Europe / EU / EMEA

Works across all of Europe, including the UK, Spain, Germany, France, etc.

Region Free

No region restriction. Equivalent to Global. Works anywhere.

RU / CIS

Only Russia and CIS countries. Won’t work in North America or Western Europe. Some require a VPN to activate — we don’t recommend it.

LATAM

Latin America only. Won’t work in the US or Europe. Works in Mexico, Argentina, Chile, Colombia, etc.

NA / North America

United States and Canada only. Won’t work outside of that region.

Asia

Asian countries only. Won’t work in other regions.

Which region should I buy?

1. Global — Always works ✅
2. A region that matches where you are — Works ✅
3. Region Free — Works anywhere ✅
4. Any region outside yours — Probably WON’T work ❌

What happens if I buy the wrong region?

Steam will show the error: “This product isn’t available in your region”. You won’t be able to activate the key.

If that happens:

1. Contact the store where you bought it
2. Ask for a key swap or a refund
3. Most stores have buyer protection for these cases

Why are regional keys cheaper?

Game prices vary by country. A game that costs $60 in the US may cost $15 in Argentina or Turkey. Sellers buy keys in cheap countries and resell them.

Global/Europe keys cost a bit more because they work in more countries, but they’re still much cheaper than buying on Steam directly.
