How to get Steam gift cards cheaper (and when they're the wrong purchase)

Steam gift cards are the standard way to fund an account without a card on file, and the standard gift for someone whose taste in games you can’t guess. They can also be bought below face value — with a couple of traps that turn a saving into an unredeemable code.

First, the honest part: often you shouldn’t buy one at all

If your goal is a specific game, a gift card is usually the expensive route. Buying €50 of wallet credit at a 10% discount saves you €5. Buying that same game as a key from a marketplace routinely saves 30-50% — six to ten times more.

Gift cards genuinely make sense when:

• You’re gifting and don’t know what they want
• You have no payment method on the account (common for younger players, or accounts in countries with card issues)
• You’re funding purchases Steam is the only source for: free-to-play microtransactions, Community Market items, in-game currency
• You want a hard spending cap — the credit runs out, the card can’t

If you know the game, compare it across stores first. Nine times out of ten, that’s where the real saving is.

Where gift cards cost less than face value

Retailers and marketplaces sell Steam wallet codes at a discount because they buy in volume. Eneba is the one we track — codes in EUR, USD and GBP across the usual denominations, delivered by email, redeemed by you at Steam.

Discounts on wallet codes are thinner than on game keys (single digits to low teens, versus 30-50% on keys). That’s normal: a wallet code is cash, and nobody discounts cash heavily. Treat a 10% saving as a good result here.

The currency-region trap (the #1 reason a code fails)

This is stricter than with game keys, so read it twice: a Steam wallet code is tied to a currency and region. A EUR code will not redeem on an account set to USD, and vice versa. There’s no workaround and no refund from Steam if you buy the wrong one.

Before buying, check your account’s currency: open the Steam store, look at any game’s price, and note the symbol. Then buy the code in that currency. Our guide on why keys sometimes don’t activate covers the same logic for games — but wallet codes are less forgiving.

And no, a gift card can’t change your region

A recurring myth worth killing: you cannot use a gift card from a cheaper country to switch your Steam store region. Valve doesn’t count wallet codes as a registered local payment method, so it won’t work — and attempting the wider region-switching manoeuvre risks your account, as we covered in the VPN article.

Two more things worth knowing before you buy

• Wallet funds are one-way. Once credit is on the account it can’t be transferred out, cashed back, or moved to another account. Buy what you’ll actually spend.
• Bigger denominations don’t get better rates. Unlike game bundles, €50 of credit buys exactly €50 of games. The only variable is the discount you got on the card itself, so there’s no reason to over-buy.

The safety rules (identical to buying keys)

1. Buy on a platform with payment protection, never through a DM or social media seller
2. Match the currency/region of the code to your account
3. Redeem it yourself at Steam — no legitimate seller needs your Steam login
4. Distrust extreme outliers: 10% under face value is a real discount, 60% under is a stolen card
5. Pay with a disputable method and keep the order confirmation until it redeems
