Game Pass vs buying games: which is actually cheaper in 2026?

Game Pass vs buying games: which is actually cheaper in 2026?

“Why buy games when Game Pass exists?” — and the mirror question — come up constantly. The honest answer depends on a number nobody calculates: how many of the games you actually play would you have bought anyway? Let’s do the real math.

The raw numbers

  • PC Game Pass: roughly €120-145/year depending on plan and promos
  • Over 3 years: €360-435 — and if you stop paying, you own nothing
  • That same budget on discounted keys (40-70% off, the normal price when you compare stores) buys roughly 25-45 games you keep forever

So the question is never “is Game Pass worth €12/month?” — it’s “do I play enough of its catalog to beat what €12 buys in owned games?”

When Game Pass genuinely wins

  1. You play day-one releases: two full-price launches a year (€140+) already exceed the subscription — if they’re ON Game Pass (Xbox first-party and a rotating set of day-one indies are)
  2. You’re a grazer: you try 5-10 games a month, finish few, love variety
  3. Short intense phases: subscribe one month (€1-13 with promos), demolish a backlog of its catalog, cancel

When buying wins (most patient players)

  1. You play fewer, longer games: if you finish 5-10 games a year, buying them discounted costs €50-120 total — half a subscription, and you keep them
  2. Your games aren’t on it: the catalog rotates and skips most non-Microsoft AAA (no GTA, rarely Sony ports at launch, most JRPGs late or never)
  3. You replay / mod / play multiplayer for years: a game that leaves the catalog takes your save’s future with it
  4. You’re patient: 6-12 months after launch, almost everything costs 40-70% less as a key — the entire premise of buying at the right time

The hybrid strategy (what we’d actually do)

  • Subscribe intermittently: 1-2 months of Game Pass a year, during releases you care about — not 12 months on autopilot
  • Buy to own everything you’ll replay, mod or play online long-term — comparing stores first, because the “expensive” option is usually just the un-compared one
  • Never pay full price for a game that’s 4+ months old without checking its all-time low first

The trap to avoid

The subscription’s real cost isn’t €12 — it’s the autopilot months you pay while playing one game you could have bought for €15 and kept. Audit your last 6 months: if you played fewer than 3 catalog games monthly, the math says buy.
